The 99th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 16th September 1874 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Apology, a chestnut filly by Adventurer out of Mandragora, owned by Mr Launde (aka Reverend John William King), trained at Ashgill, Middleham by William Howe Osborne and ridden by John Osborne junior. A field of 13 runners contested the race, although there were 197 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 4925 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,265. | Blantyre and The Scamp were determined to make the pace true and took the early lead from Glenalmond. After 4 furlongs Boulet took up the running and maintained his lead until the Red House, closely followed by Leolinus, but with Apology going ominously well. Indeed, fully half a mile from home the crowd were shouting 'Apology wins it' and she duly obliged by 1 1/2 lengths from Leolinus in 3 minutes 16 seconds, with Trent fully 5 lengths back in third. She was a most accomplished filly, winning the 1000 Guineas,the Oaks and the Coronation Stakes at Ascot. | Over Round 104% | ||
